Volkswagen uncovers oldest and highest mileage diesel vehicles in the United States
In January of 2007 Volkswagen announced that it was launching a search for both the oldest running and highest mileage diesel vehicles currently running and registered for use. The hunt was part of VW?s 30th anniversary celebration of selling diesel vehicles to U.S. customers, and beginning March 1, 2007, VW owners could submit their information online.
During the third week of August the oldest model was revealed: a 1977 Rabbit in Tehachapi, California owned by Clint Wilson. The following week, Volkswagen proudly declared its highest mileage winner: a 1986 Jetta with more than 562,000 miles owned by Syl Schmid of Blue Rock, Ohio. Both Wilson and Schmid are being awarded with the privilege of driving a brand new Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI for a six-month time period.

Volkswagen develops cleanest TDI turbo-diesel engine ever, confirms 50-state emissions compliance
Mercedes recently announced it has developed a 50-state legal diesel powerplant using BLUETEC technology to be shown at next week's Detroit auto show and released to the American public in 2008. Today, Volkswagen has announced another advanced diesel engine family coming to market in 2008: the cleanest TDI turbo-diesels ever produced.
The Volkswagen engine line also employs BLUETEC emissions controls, as the technology was co-developed with Audi and DaimlerChrysler (which includes Mercedes). Depending on the vehicle application, two distinct emissions systems are employed specifically in reducing nitrogen oxide output. The first utilizes "NOx reservoir catalytic converter technology" which "absorbs" oxides of nitrogen as a sponge would. Maintenance and cleaning of the system are not required, as the engine management system simply changes its mode of operation for a few seconds to clean the associated parts. VW Jetta models fitted with the 2.0-liter diesel will include this technology, making them Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions complaint and thus legal for sale in all 50 states.
Volkswagen vehicles the size of the Passat sedan/station wagon and larger will get the second more complex emissions system featuring a "Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalytic converter." Using an aqueous solution called AdBlue, the technology injects the 32.5-percent urea liquid into the exhaust system where it becomes ammonia before reaching the catalytic converter. Once there, ammonia reacts with oxides of nitrogen yielding nitrogen and water. Since AdBlue is a stand alone liquid it must be refilled, and VW claims replenishment is required at every other service interval. American regulations dictate the system must be completely functional for at least 150,000 miles.
